40-year-old deaf man arrested for raping 6-month-old baby

Shaaibu Yakubu Abdullahi, a 40-year-old deaf teacher was arrested in Yobe state Thursday, on September 1, for raping a 6-month-old baby until her intestines got destroyed.

 According to reports which trended on twitter under the hashtag #JusticeForHajara, the culprit allegedly admitted to his crime and is out on bail.

Muhammad Gidado Fari, the Commandant of Nigeria Security and Defence Corps (NSCDC), revealed that the teacher, was arrested by men of the NSCDC for allegedly raping the baby in the Potiskum area of Yobe state. 

The NSCDC commandant said that the deaf teacher allegedly connived with his 10-year-old student, who carried the baby to him from her neighbour’s house.

 Although Abdullahi denied the allegation, he was identified by the 10-year-old student in a group picture of staff and student taken in the school.

 The suspect was arrested after a non-governmental organization, National Council of Women Society (NCWS), reported the situation to the corps, adding that the matter has been reported to the state’s Ministry of Justice for prosecution as the case needs a professional in sign language to interpret.

 The President of NCWS, Halima Kyari Joda, said the baby was taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for examination and proper treatment

The news of the suspect’s freedom from police custody has created an uproar on social media as Nigerians have blasted the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) for reportedly granting bail to the alleged rapist.
